Restoration of Gran Via Transportation Corridor

The improvement of Barcelona's Gran Via presented the City with an opportunity to add four new tram (light rail) stations. These not only added connectivity to the area but also provided a unified and consistent element for branding the train stations, and "humanizing" the areas impacted by the tramway /rail corridor and adjacent Gran Via highway expansion.

As an opportunity for urban renewal and creation of neighborhood identity, each of the new stations was designed as an "architectural statement," that not only had relevance to surrounding neighborhoods, but through consistency, created a "brand" for the tram system.  Each station created a "sense of place" within the neighborhood, and reinforced neighborhood identity.  They included such features as bicycle access and stations, accessible drop off and loading areas, public amenities (food services, vendors, lobbies and waiting areas, wi-fi access etc.), station entrances and parking.  The emphasis on pedestrian scale and focus, along with lighting and landscaping enhanced security and visibility around the stations.
