Metro Arc Triomf Station

This project focused on the design of two new lobbies in Barcelona's "Arc de Triomf" Intermodal train station. The goals of the project were to improve flow and access, as well as to meet ADA standards through the provision of elevators as well as escalators.

Improved access facilitated the interconnection between the commuter and regional transport networks. The lobbies are located at each end of the train station, between street level and the three tunnels encompassing the railway tracks.  Consequently, one challenge of this project was constructing the lobbies while keeping the station in service. This was accomplished by building the lobbies' foundations by drilling around the existing tunnels, which were constructed with mass concrete approximately 80 years ago.  In addition, the rectangular floor plan encompassed the total width of the three tunnels. Slurry walls were carefully built on both lateral sides, with a minimum distance of 10 inches in some cases, between the tunnel side walls and the reinforced concrete walls.

The remaining foundation (non peripheral) was completed with 30 m-deep micropiles. These follow rail alignments that go over the two side walls, which support both the commuter train and the subway's concrete vaults. In order to avoid transmiting tension to the old tunnels, this micropile stretch was lubricated and coated with flexible PVC in order to make it non- adherent.
