The regional government of Catalonia is improving the rail link between the regions of Barcelona and Valles Occidental, with populations of 2.5 million and 1 million respectively. This improvement includes increasing train frequency, constructing new stations and upgrading existing ones, particularly to improve the interchangers with high speed rail, metro and commuter trains. The new station is located in the municipality Sant Cugat del Valles, Barcelona.  This project also includes construction of a new 185-space parking lot for commuters. 

The station consists of two buildings linked by an underpass equipped with escalators and elevators. The interiors are designed as light spaces mixing glass and glass-lined steel. Construction required flattening the railroad gradient which involved the modification and expansion of existing structures and placement of 1.9 km of new railway track with a corresponding overhead system. The construction of eight new railway detours required the installation of a new electronic interlocking.
