To improve the connection between commuter metro lines in Barcelona and the commuter railway network, transitworks' parent company (GPO) prepared a detailed design for the La Sagrera Station, serving the suburban lines C3 (Hospitalet-Vic), C4 (St. Vicenç de Calders/Vilafranca-Manresa) and C7 (Cerdanyola- Universitat Hospitalet/Martorell). The project required designing a key strategic node within Barcelona's public rail transport system, while minimizing impacts on commuter access, roadway traffic and rail network operations.
The new La Sagrera Station has a ¼ mile central platform as well as two lobbies on each end of the station, one of which is connected to the metro rail network. There were several unique conditions that limited the possible design options. An existing structural caisson dictated the configuration of the central platform station. Location of the station lobby was determined by space restrictions and the need to integrate the lobby area with lines L1 and L5. Variations in elevations between the old and new railway track also required special consideration. The structural solution for the caisson, with micro-piles and foundation walls braced by a top slab, allowed the excavation to be performed under cover, providing continuity with track level recovery. The location of the new station required alteration of the RENFE railway tracks over almost a half mile in length.
