transitworks' parent company (GPO) was retained to perform planning and design of the Cuenca high-speed railway station, an important component of the eastern high-speed railway line linking Madrid and Valencia and expanding connections throughout Spain and Europe. The challenge was to design a new station that would support implementation of the high-speed rail line, while also serving as a symbolic edifice for the community.
The guiding theme resulted in two long, clearly distinguished horizontally encircling structures. The station as viewed from Cuenca is transformed into a huge metallic venue that appears to float on the hill and forms a backdrop for the City. The station interior provides efficient access to the platforms, shops, cafeteria and departure lounge, while also featuring an open space adapted to the local surroundings.
The Cuenca Station is the first "green" station designed in Spain. It is one of the most sustainable in the world utilizing geothermal energy, solar energy and other energy saving measures to conserve natural resources and reduce maintenance costs.
Vehicular access to the Cuenca Station will be enhanced by a new roundabout on the N-320 leading to the station, bus parking and public car park. The station has been designed to provide for the future incorporation of a tram or similar system of public transit.
