High-Speed Rail Line Madrid – Zaragoza – French Border

La Sagrera Intermodal Station

One of the most ambitious railway projects in Europe, the station will have a constructed surface area of 2,660,000 square feet, to which 420,000 square feet of urban park will be added. La Sagrera will become the City of Barcelona's largest development, incorporating a major intermodal transportation hub with commercial and residential space and an extensive urban renewal program. The four-level complex is expected to handle 100 million travelers per year and will connect high-speed trains with local and regional railways as well as buses, taxis and private vehicles.

Scheduled for completion in 2012, La Sagrera Station is the final link in the line that connects Spain's existing high-speed train system (Alta Velocidad Española, or AVE) to the French border and the French high-speed railway (Lignes à Grande Vitesse, or LGV). The connection will enable high-speed travel from Madrid to Paris and beyond.

The immense size of the project and the need to integrate structures and facilities with other modes and multiple uses required special solutions and adjustments in the design and construction process. Two upper floors accommodate the high-speed rail network and a new bus station. The lower levels encompass the local train network, Metro and parking garages. The station will be partially covered by a new linear park with skylights over the main hall. The station is being built to comply with energy efficient and sustainable design criteria.
