Burbank Elementary School

San Diego Unified School District

San Diego, California

The new 52,644 SF elementary school includes a two-story classroom/library building, a multi-purpose building with attached lunch shelter and kitchen unit, an administration/classroom building, a separate kindergarten building with its own protected playground area, and an entry structure with connecting arcades. One of the factors which influenced the architectural form and design concept is the surrounding environment. Careful consideration was given to the scale, proportions and detailing to allow the new buildings to coexist in harmony with its residential neighbors, instead of competing against the surroundings.
